In 2014, males represented only 8.7% of unduplicated clients served by New York State Department of Health’s (NYS DOH) family planning provider network. There is no doubt that males play an integral role in family planning, though they make up a minority of clients served in New York State family planning settings.
In response, the New York State Center of Excellence for Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services (NYS COE) offered hands-on clinical trainings focusing on building clinicians’ proficiency and comfort around providing comprehensive family planning services to male clients. More specifically, participants reviewed key considerations when completing a sexual and reproductive health history and were guided through the steps for completing a comprehensive physical exam.
As a result of this training, participants were able to:
- Outline how to complete a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health history for a male client
- Describe the key components of a comprehensive male sexual and reproductive health examination
- Practice techniques for conducting a comprehensive male sexual and reproductive health examination
