CAI, a training, technical assistance, and research-to-practice nonprofit organization, is seeking a highly motivated professional for the full-time position of Tobacco Community Mobilizer/Study Manager. The Tobacco Community Mobilizer/Study Manager will work under the Director, Division of Community and Stakeholder Engagement to Promote Health Equity, and closely with the Research Study Director and other key staff to assist in the implementation of an exciting CDC-funded research study that will evaluate an ongoing initiative, “Black people Against Tobacco,” located in Jackson, MS. Funded from 2021-2026, Black people Against Tobacco is an innovative project that will educate, engage, and empower the Black community in Jackson, Mississippi to fight back against the predatory tobacco industry and increase their ability to advocate for stronger, locally or regionally driven tobacco-control and prevention policies and practices. The successful candidate must live in Jackson, MS, and have strong knowledge and connections to local community-based organizations. Tobacco control experience is desired but not mandatory.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will be required to work directly with the Director, Division of Community and Stakeholder Engagement to Promote Health Equity and the Jackson Research Study Director and Project BAT team to coordinate the day-to-day functioning of the study to advocate for policies that restrict the sales of menthol and other flavored tobacco products and to build momentum for tobacco-control policy reforms across "Tobacco Nation”. The project accomplishes this by using a community-driven approach for mobilization and policy reform that specifically focuses on engaging community segments that have historically been marginalized in policy-related conversations. The project will also utilize a process of creative problem solving to learn from these individuals firsthand how they perceive the problem of menthol, strategize ways to address it within their community, and educate them on how to advocate for policy change.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but are not limited to)
- Recruit community members to participate in the Community Action Group, studyactivities, and trainings
- Schedule and conduct study activities (e.g., interviews, focus groups, surveys, and/or community cafes)
- Manage and maintain stakeholder partnerships
- Manage, support, and engage community members who are part of part of Project BAT Community Action Groups (CAGs)
- Coordinate and schedule studymeetings and conference calls
- Record and distribute meeting minutes and notes
- Develop and submit relevant reports & invoices
- Coordinate and manage logistics for trainings, webinars, and/or symposia
- Respond to community members requests for technical assistance
- Conduct media outreach
- Support social media page development and management other duties as required
- Support with collation and organization of data for reporting requirements
- Assist with preparation of reports, presentations, and other correspondences to effectively promote the study
- Perform other duties as necessary/assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Highly organized and independent worker
- Bachelor's Degree desired, experience in public health and community organizing
- 3 years of work experience in a position that requires responsibility and autonomy
- Preferred experience in policy, advocacy, and public health marketing and media
- Proficient in using Microsoft Suite (PPT, Word, Excel), virtual meeting platforms like Zoom, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Constant Contact
- Flexible to work on evening and on weekends as it is occasionally required
- Must demonstrate personal responsibility and integrity and show initiative
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Creative mindset and ability to think outside boundaries
- Applies principles of cultural humility in their work practices and in everyday life
Must possess a valid driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes.
