CAI has been providing training and technical assistance to local and state service agencies across the U.S. for over 30 years. Each year, CAI develops and delivers hundreds of training programs that are dynamic, interactive and culturally competent and tailored to the needs of the participants and the organization requesting the program. To develop an effective training program, we work closely with the requesting agency, funders, relevant field experts and training participants, as well as the clients who will receive the agency's services. CAI uses a competency-based experiential approach to training and incorporates adult learning principles in the design of all our programs. We emphasize the use of interactive and experiential learning methods, including small group work, case studies, role playing, simulations, group discussions, brainstorming and critical thinking activities. To support the ongoing development of learners and their ability to implement and integrate new skills into practice, we accompany nearly all our training programs with follow-up technical assistance. We also provide training to supervisors and leadership to ensure that our training participants have the support needed to continue applying their new skills.
CAI conducts a customized needs assessment for each training project to determine capacity-building topic areas and priorities that must be covered, to assess existing knowledge, to determine the expectations of training participants and to pinpoint training objectives. CAI also conducts on-site visits to develop a first-hand understanding of each agency and its training needs.
Cultural competency is an integral component of all CAI training programs. Studies have consistently found that many underserved populations lack trust in their health care/social service providers or feel disrespected by providers and program staff. CAI builds the capacity of providers to effectively work with clients who have diverse values and/or cultures, ensuring better programmatic outcomes.
