The Tobacco-Free Coalition of Erie & Niagara Counties (The Coalition) may be new on the scene, however, when it comes to fighting Big Tobacco, our team has over 20 years of experience in the continued fight to save lives.
Funding by the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Control, we will bring together youth, community stakeholders and health experts, fully dedicated to the reduction of illnesses and deaths attributed to tobacco use or exposure to secondhand smoke.
We are committed to decreasing tobacco use by adults and to preventing our youth from ever starting. To do this, we will mobilize our communities to:
- Support efforts that will reduce the impact of retail tobacco marketing on youth and adults, especially those representing vulnerable populations.
- Increase opportunities for tobacco-free outdoor areas, especially around parks and beaches.
- Reduce secondhand smoke exposure in multi-unit housing.
The Coalition will also continue the support of Reality Check chapters in both counties that will contribute to the advancement and growth of a youth action movement to counter the marketing and advertising tactics of the tobacco industry, including flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes (“vaping”) which has been the fastest growing trend amongst high-school-aged youth in the state and across the country.
