NYS COE LARC Clinical Institute

Increased utilization of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) on a population-level is a first-line strategy to reduce rates of unintended pregnancy. Accordingly, both the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) and the "Providing Quality Family Planning Services: Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs" (also referred to as the "QFP") recognize the critical need for family planning provider agencies to build internal capacity to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and client-focused LARC services. The New York State Center of Excellence for Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services (NYS COE) recognizes that such capacity requires more than knowing how to insert a LARC device. It necessitates:

  • Ability to address myths and misconceptions about the safety of LARCs with both clients and colleagues
  • Familiarity with cutting-edge and evidence-based practices in the provision of LARC services
  • Skill to work with clients in managing side effects

The goal of the NYS COE LARC Clinical Institute - held November 20 in Syracuse, NY, and December 4 in New York, NY - was to enhance the capacity of clinicians to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and client-focused LARC services. It was designed to build the knowledge and expertise of both seasoned clinicians and those newer to the field.
